Morgan Freeman Doubles Down On Ill Feelings Towards Black History Month: The ‘Whole Idea Makes My Teeth Itch’
Morgan Freeman recently expressed strong opinions regarding the celebration of Black History Month.
The 87-year-old actor has long been vocal about his disapproval of the annual observance and the term “African American.”
In a recent interview, he elaborated on his views, saying Black History Month is “not right” while questioning the length of the celebration.
“I detest it. The mere idea of it. You are going to give me the shortest month in a year? And you are going to celebrate ‘my’ history?! This whole idea makes my teeth itch. It’s not right.”
The comments came as Morgan Freeman was promoting The Gray House, a series he executive produced. While discussing the project, Morgan Freeman emphasized his belief that Black history should be viewed as an integral part of American history:
“My history is American history. It’s the one thing in this world I am interested in, beyond making money, having a good time, and getting enough sleep.”

“I think that all these dedicated months need to be ended. I am am American.”

Another X user wrote,
“Respect to Morgan Freeman for speaking his truth, but let’s not forget the importance of dedicated spaces to celebrate & acknowledge the unique struggles & achievements of Black Americans.”

Freeman’s critique of BHM is not new. In an April 2023 interview, he questioned the relegation of Black history to a single month and the use of the term “African-American.”
He stated,
“Black History Month is an insult. You’re going to relegate my history to a month… Also ‘African-American’ is an insult. I don’t subscribe to that title. Black people have had different titles all the way back to the N-word and I do not know how these things get such a grip.”
