It’s official!

Compton rap star Kendrick Lamar was recently announced as the next Super Bowl Halftime show headliner, and he’s getting a major vote of confidence from hip-hop veteran Jay-Z.

The NFL shared the big news across their social media pages earlier today (Sunday, September 8th), along with Kendrick Lamar, Apple Music, and the Jay-Z owned media and management company Roc Nation. Super Bowl LIX is scheduled to air live on Fox February 9th of next year at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Speaking about his performance, Kendrick Lamar, 37, stated:

“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date…And I’ll be there to remind the world why,”

He added:

“They got the right one.”

Sean ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, whose Roc Nation company has been orchestrating the halftime show since become the league’s Live Music Entertainment Strategists a few years back, also spoke about the decision to tap Lamar for the performance. He stated:

“Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. Kendrick’s work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”

Taking a look at Lamar’s stellar year, it’s no surprise why he was booked for the job. Along with taking the win in his rap battle against Drake, the “Damn” artist also released the song of the summer with his chart topping single “Not Like Us.” The song broke numerous streaming records and spent two weeks at the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Additionally, Lamar is an international super star with 17 Grammy’s to his name, several #1 albums, and is credited with becoming the first non-classical, non-jazz musician to earn a Pulitzer Prize. February’s show will be the second time Lamar will take the Super Bowl Halftime stage. If you recall, he also joined his fellow L.A. native Dr. Dre’s performance a few years back. which also featured Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, and 50 Cent.

Reacting to the news, some social media users seem to believe that Jay-Z is using Lamar to take a personal shot at Drake. Speculations about the matter were fueled after the billionaire’s friend and former X (formerly Twitter) CEO Jack Dorsey tweeted a line from Drake and J. Cole ‘s collab “First Person Shooter” where they rapped:

“Big as the what? / Big as the super bowl”

If you recall, the song is widely considered to be the catalyst that ignited Drake and Lamar’s rap exchange earlier this year. On the other hand DJ Akademiks, who has been and remained a staunch supporter of Drake, called out Jay-Z and the NFL for appearing to snub Lil Wayne as the half time performer despite the show being in his hometown.
