Family Of Botham Jean Awarded Over $98 Million 6 Years After He Was Murdered By Police Officer Amber Guyger
A federal jury awarded $98,650,000 to the family of Botham Jean, who was killed by former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger in 2018 after she entered his apartment.
After deliberating for about three hours, the jury determined that Amber Guyger used excessive force, mistaking Jean for an intruder in his own apartment. They found she violated his constitutional rights during the shooting.
The damages included $10.25 million for Botham Jean’s estate, $14.2 million each for his parents for their losses, and $60 million in punitive damages against Amber Guyger. Botham Jean’s mother, Allison, expressed that, despite her sadness, the verdict affirmed her son’s value, stating it sends a signal that his life mattered. Jean’s father, Bertrum, remarked that justice had been served.
Prayers to Botham Jean’s loved ones.
