Questlove’s Documentary About Funk Legend Sly Stone Set To Premiere At Sundance Film Festival
Questlove’s latest documentary, SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), is set to premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23!
The film explores the life, music, and cultural legacy of funk icon Sly Stone, highlighting the challenges faced by Black artists navigating fame. When first announcing the project, Questlove stated:
“Sly’s creative legacy is in my DNA… it’s a Black musician’s blueprint,” Questlove shared when announcing the project.”

Sly Stone, best known as the frontman of Sly and the Family Stone, rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s with his fusion of soul, rock, psychedelia and gospel. He is often credited with perfecting the funk sound pioneered by James Brown.
The documentary marks the follow-up to Questlove’s Oscar-winning debut, Summer of Soul, and continues his mission to celebrate and preserve Black music history.
