Simone Biles Hints At Retirement, Says 2028 Olympics Unlikely: ‘I’m Humble Enough To Know When To Be Done’
Simone Biles has hinted that her Olympic career may be over. In an interview with “Sports Illustrated,” which named her the 2024 Sportsperson of the Year, the most decorated gymnast in history said it’s unlikely she’ll compete in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“Because I’ve accomplished so much, there’s almost nothing left to do, rather than to just be snobby and to try again and for what? I’m humble enough to know when to be done,” the seven-time Olympic gold medalist said.
Simone Biles, 27, also reflected on the personal sacrifices involved in returning to competition, including delaying starting a family with her husband, Jonathan Owens. “When you’re younger, it’s like, prom, college. Now it’s like, starting a family, being away from my husband. What’s really worth it?” she shared.
Despite her record-breaking achievements, Simone Biles said she hasn’t fully grasped the impact of her legacy. “I don’t think the reality has set in of what I’ve exactly done in the sport,” she admitted. “Maybe I’ll realize it in a couple years like, Damn, she was good.”
Biles previously hinted at retirement during the Paris 2024 Olympics, calling her gold-medal performance on the Yurchenko double pike her last attempt at the skill. “Never say never,” she said, acknowledging the allure of competing at a home Olympics in 2028. If she did, Biles would be 31 and the first American gymnast to qualify for four Olympics.
