Wildfires Force Evacuations In San Diego Amid Dangerous Winds
Wildfires fueled by hurricane-force winds erupted across San Diego County early Tuesday, prompting evacuations, power outages, and school closures.
The Lilac Fire, the largest blaze, burned 80 acres in Bonsall, displacing 86 residents and damaging two structures. Firefighters contained the smaller Pala Fire (17 acres) and Riverview Fire (1 acre). The Friars Fire is the only one with currently 0% containment and stretching 2 acres.
Winds reaching 102 mph were recorded as red flag warnings stretched across Southern California. Nearly 50,000 residents were without power, with outages concentrated in San Diego, Riverside, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino counties.
“Stay alert and follow updates,” urged San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond.
The National Weather Service declared, “THIS IS A PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION.”
Fire weather is expected to persist midweek.
