‘New Jack City’ Director Barry Michael Cooper Passes Away At 66 [CONDOLENCES]
Barry Michael Cooper, the acclaimed writer behind the 1990s classic “New Jack City,” has passed away at 66 in Baltimore, Maryland, TMZ confirms. Known for penning iconic films like “Above the Rim” featuring Tupac Shakur and “Sugar Hill,” Barry Michael Cooper also produced Netflix’s “She’s Gotta Have It,” series, based on Spike Lee’s groundbreaking film.
Starting his career as a journalist, Barry Michael Cooper wrote for Spin Magazine and the Village Voice, showcasing his storytelling talents before transitioning to screenwriting. Just a week before his passing, Cooper honored Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy in a heartfelt Instagram post on January 15.
