Trump Nominates Ex National Security Mike Waltz As UN Ambassador
Former National Security Adviser Mike Waltz has been nominated by Donald Trump to serve as U.N. ambassador, even as questions swirl around his involvement in Signalgate.
Despite heavy Democratic criticism and cheers over his removal, Donald Trump offered “full-throated support” for Waltz. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will temporarily assume the role of national security adviser. Some Senate Republicans praised Waltz amid his exit. “As National Security Advisor, he has provided President Donald Trump with sound advice and has a clear-eyed view of the world, both regarding our friends and our adversaries,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). “Mike understands America First and will be a strong voice at the UN representing our interests.”
The ambassadorship is considered a top diplomatic prize, historically leading to higher offices and offering perks like a government-owned Manhattan apartment.
Despite the controversy, Waltz’s path to confirmation appears smooth with strong GOP backing.
