Air Traffic Controllers For Newark Airport Lose Radar Again, Planes Went Untracked For 90 Seconds

The #FAA says air traffic controllers lost radar for 90 seconds at 3:55 a.m. on Friday (May 9), marking the second blackout in just two weeks. During the outage, planes arriving and departing were temporarily invisible to controllers. The first incident on April 28 caused major delays and cancellations, and some workers were placed on leave.

New Jersey Congressman #JoshGottheimer pointed to staffing shortages and aging infrastructure, saying, “The airport is short 40 traffic controllers … the air tower they work in was built in 1973.”

Transportation Secretary #SeanDuffy told #FOXNews,

“We’re hiring more air traffic controllers, we’re fixing the system, but it’s going to take time.”

He also announced bonuses for controllers who stay past retirement and upgrades to fiber optic lines between Philadelphia and New York.
