U.S. Basketball Player Jarred Shaw Could Face De@th Penalty For Allegedly Smuggling Cannabis Candies Into Indonesia
An American basketball player arrested in Indonesia could face life in prison or even the de@th penalty over dr*g smuggling charges.
Jarred Dwayne Shaw was arrested and charged with dr*g smuggling after Indonesian police raided his apartment on May 7 and found 132 pieces of Delta 9 THC cannabis candies. The package was reportedly sent from Thailand, where cannabis has been decriminalized, but it’s completely illegal in Indonesia.
According to the Associated Press, around 530 people are currently on de@th row in Indonesia, most for drug-related offenses.
Jarred Shaw, who has played in the Indonesian Basketball League since 2022 (most recently with the Tangerang Hawks), has since been banned from the league.
Tangerang Hawks’ manager Tikky Suwantikno confirmed Jarred Shaw was immediately fired for breach of contract. The league’s chairman, Budisatrio Djiwandono, told the AP, “We don’t tolerate players, administrators or anyone in the field involved in dr*gs.”
