Music Exec Eugene ‘Big U’ Henley Reportedly Representing Himself In High-Stakes RICO Trial After Lawyer Cites Breakdown In Trust & Communication
Big U says he’s ready to take on the federal government by himself.
According to All Hip-Hop, the longtime Los Angeles community figure, born Eugene Henley Jr., told the court he plans to represent himself in a sweeping RICO trial after his attorney, Arturo Hernandez, filed a motion to withdraw.
“The attorney-client relationship has deteriorated to the point where continued representation would be unfair to both the client and the court,” Hernandez wrote, citing a complete breakdown in communication and trust.
Now, without legal representation, Big U told the court he lacked the funds to hire new counsel. He’s been in federal custody since his March 19 arrest, facing serious charges alongside 18 others connected to the Rollin’ 60s Neighborhood Crips.
The indictment accuses them of running a v*olent criminal enterprise, using social media and fear to dominate Los Angeles.
Prosecutors claim Big U also used his non-profit, Developing Options, to launder money. The trial begins in May 2026.
What are your thoughts on Big U being his own lawyer?
