Family Of 18-Year-Old Jabari Peoples Says Alabama Police Made ‘No Real Effort’ To Communicate After He Was Fatally Shot By Officer
The family of Jabari Peoples says they were blindsided by tragedy, and now they want answers.
On June 23, the 18-year-old college student was fatally shot by a police officer in Homewood, Alabama. According to the Homewood Police Department, an officer was investigating a “suspicious vehicle” when Peoples, the driver, allegedly “retrieved a handgun” during a struggle, prompting the officer to shoot.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency says the encounter was captured on the officer’s body camera and arrangements are being made for the family to view the footage. However, the family’s attorney says there has been “no real effort” to communicate with them and called HPD’s version of events “a charade.”

In a June 24 Facebook post, the family wrote,
“We have not received a full incident report… We have not been given footage. We have not heard one word of explanation from the Homewood Police Department.”
They also dispute the police’s sequence of events, writing,
“Jabari complied, and within seconds, he was taken to the ground and shot… A witness was present. That person saw everything. There was no weapon. There was no threat.”
The family says they will continue to pursue the case until the truth is fully exposed.
Our prayers are with Jabari Peoples’ loved ones during this challenging time.
