Lupita Nyong’o Reveals She Had 30 Fibroids Removed In 2014 + Launches Research Grant To End ‘Silence’ Around Women’s Pain
Lupita Nyong’o has revealed her painful journey with uterine fibroids, sharing that she underwent surgery in 2014 to remove 30 of the growths.
“I hope my experience will resonate with anyone else who has ever felt dismissed, confused or alone,” she wrote.
Partnering with the Foundation for Women’s Health, Nyong’o announced the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant to fund less invasive treatments for the condition, which affects 15 million women in the U.S.
“When we reach puberty, we’re taught that periods mean pain,” she shared. “We must reject the normalization of female pain.” She also called for “early education, better screening, robust prevention research, and non-invasive treatment options.”
After going public with her story, the “A Quiet Place: Day One” star joined lawmakers on Capitol Hill to advocate for legislation supporting fibroid research.
“We deserve better,” she added. “Silence serves no one!”
