Mariah Carey Says She Wishes She & Tupac Would Have Dated As She Reflects On Their Brief 1996 AMAs Encounter
Mariah Carey is opening up about a brief but unforgettable moment with Tupac Shakur that left her wishing they had dated.
During a visit to Power 106’s Brown Bag Mornings on Tuesday, the singer recalled meeting the late rapper at the 1996 American Music Awards.
“Well, he said it like ‘Hi, Mariah,’ and I was like [ahhh],” she shared, adding that the encounter gave her “more than butterflies.”
Carey remembered hosting the awards that night and kept returning backstage in hopes of another exchange.
“I wanted to keep going back and forth because that happened,” she admitted.
She went on to describe the introduction as a milestone.
“I love hip-hop and I love the moments that we’re talking about, especially ‘Hi, Mariah.’ So yeah, it was a pretty major moment for me to say the least,” she said. When asked if she wished they dated, Carey responded simply, “I wish.”
