Nancy Pelosi, First Female Speaker Of The House, Announces Retirement After 40-
Year Career
Rep. #NancyPelosi announced that she “will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” signalling the end of her nearly 40-year tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives.
She made the announcement today (Nov. 6) in a video address, saying, “With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service.” Pelosi’s departure marks a significant moment in congressional history: she was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, and she built a career that combined legislative achievement, fundraising prowess and political leadership. By stepping aside, she leaves a vacuum of experience and influence in the House, and opens up discussions about generational change in the Democratic caucus.
While #Pelosi will serve out her current term and finish her final year in office, the focus now turns to who will succeed her both in her #SanFrancisco-area congressional district and within the broader party.
