T.I. Admits He Thought Al Music Was ‘Dangerous’ Until Dr. Dre Changed His Mind + Calls It ‘An Advantage’
T.I. is rethinking his stance on artificial intelligence in music after a conversation with one of hip-hop’s most respected producers.
The Atlanta rapper recently opened up on an episode of his podcast “expediTIously,” where guest Dallas Austin asked him how he feels about AI being used in music creation. While T.I. admitted he was once firmly against it, a discussion with Dr. Dre shifted his perspective.
“I think it’s dangerous, and initially I have been emphatically against it,” the “Live Your Life” rapper said. “I will say I talked to Dr. Dre and you know he was telling me about producing for Bruce Springsteen and he’s telling me that he’s using some AI stuff.”
T.I. went on to explain that AI doesn’t replace talent, but can enhance it. “You still have to work be talented and programming to do what you want it to do,” he said, adding that the technology can actually be “an advantage.”
He also warned artists about ignoring the trend altogether. “And it’s almost like if everyone else has access to it and they’re using it and you’re not, then you’re going to be left out. And you’re going to be left behind,” he continued.
During the conversation, T.I. referenced AI artist Xania Monet, a project created by poet Telisha “Nikki” Jones, whom his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris had interest in signing.
“She’s writing the songs and she trained it with her voice, but you know, that ain’t exactly how she look and probably ain’t exactly how she sound,” T.I. said. “But it’s still her. She’s writing the music. So I think that to me is like, ‘Aight.’”
Monet recently sparked controversy after releasing a diss track aimed at Kehlani and Jermaine Dupri, who have both publicly criticized AI artists.
