Cal State Bakersfield’s Assistant Basketball Coach Behind Bars On Several Charges After Being Accused Of Working As A Pimp In Four States
California State University, Bakersfield is at the center of a crazy scandal.
Kevin Mays, a former #CSUB athlete turned assistant coach for the men’s basketball team, is in jail awaiting trial after being hit with multiple criminal charges, including allegations he worked as a pimp across four states, authorities say. The charges stemmed from an anonymous tip sent in August to then head coach Rod Barnes claiming that “HE (Mays) IS TRAFFICKING A GIRL BY THE NAME OF [redacted] … HE HAS BEEN TRAFFICKING THIS GIRL SINCE MAY.” Barnes forwarded the message to the school’s human resources office, which passed it along to university police and sparked an investigation that led to the charges.
Mays, who was hired last June and arrested just months later in September, now faces an array of felony counts beyond pimping, including possession of automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines and possession of methamphetamine and marijuana with intent to sell. Separate charges cited him for possession of more than 600 images of youth or child p*rnography and distribution of obscene matter involving someone under 18 years old.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and his attorney declined to comment, according to reports. Mays has a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 13.
