Gladys Knight is preparing to ease off the road after weeks of concern from fans and insiders over her health while performing.

According to TMZ, people close to her tour worried she wasn’t well enough to take the stage before her July 25 show at the Hollywood Bowl, and those fears proved warranted when she turned her back mid song during “Midnight Train to Georgia” and tried to walk off before a backup singer intervened.

A source described the moment as “shameful,” pointing to her age and suggesting she may be showing signs of dementia.

Knight’s husband and manager, William McDowell, has not confirmed a diagnosis but says the couple plans to see a doctor soon. He maintains that despite her ups and downs, “all she wants to do is sing.” McDowell reportedly views her September 5 show as a turning point and says he will end the tour early if she has another rough night.

In a statement, Knight confirmed she is stepping back, writing that after “much soul searching” she has decided to ease into fewer performances while focusing on new projects with her husband and time with her grandchildren.
