Petition Launched to Remove Tyler Perry’s New Shows from OWN: ‘Stop Supporting Racist Stereotypes!’
Uh, oh. Somebody’s Aunti and second cousin is none too pleased with Tyler Perry’s two new shows on Oprah’s OWN Network. And you know what we do when we don’t like something on TV, take our complaints and talents to Change.org.
So what’s the issue here? Last week, TP’s soap opera The Haves and The Have Nots, debuted earning 1.77 million viewers in its first hour and the second drawing 1.8 million viewers — the highest-rated debut in OWN network history. His second show, a comedy , Love Thy Neighbor followed with the second highest debut in the channel’s history, with 1.8 million viewers of its own.
But critics say despite ratings, they have serious beef with his content being heavily sexist, elitist and racially insensitive. The author of the petition writes:
For decades Oprah Winfrey has used her television show to educate, empower, and uplift people of all races to be better versions of themselves. OWN has committed to be an extension of this work. Where it is clear that neither Oprah or Tyler Perry are not experts on race and racism, they have also refused to utilize feedback from the conscious Black community and scholars on racism regarding the damage that Tyler Perry and his brand of entertainment perpetuate against the Black community. Stop supporting racist stereotypes on OWN and remove Tyler Perry programming!
With a little over 200 signatures, it doesn’t seem to be having much of an impact–yet. But what are your thoughts–do they have a point, in suggesting Tyler Perry’s content does’t belong on OWN? Or is this just another tired petition that has little to no merit?

What a nonsensical and unfounded petition!! Mr Perry is a seasoned writer and producer, whose works and style has been applauded over the years. His shows capture life and truth especially as relates to the African-American history and community. STOP HATING HATERS!! QUIT YOUR FOOLISHNESS AND TAKE A SEAT…AND DON’T COME FOR HIM TILL HE SENDS FOR YOU!!
Wow this person really just cited a quote from Real Housewives… Tyler Perry is only able to write triflin’ movies and now TV shows! Really though Real Housewives? This is what is wrong with our community… Tyler Perry’s writing, direction, cinematography, screenplays have all been panned by movie professionals. Seasoned professionals. Step you game up. You can like step and fetch it comedy if you like, but real talk that stuff makes black people look bad. Makes me sad to know there are people who make millions off of racist stereotyping of black folks and we sit back and say YES PLEASE GIMME SOME MORE! Oprah needs to get it together. OMG I agree with you.I didnt like the show. I was also like ok is this scene a Scandal knock off with the love scenes. And why in his show there is always someone dressed up who is 40 maybe but playing someone who is 60. I think there are plenty of women who are that age that are actually funny. I’m getting so tired of the extra religious stuff being shoved down our throats. These shows are like jerry springer meets sunday gospel hour.You have to wear cross earrings and rings and tattoo’s lets pray and in the same breath Im gonna kill this B**ch Annoying. Why is the black mother and the spanish women the maid?Why is the black daughter a lying whore? Who actually thought this shows context was a good idea. If a white person directed this show there would be a riot by now.

The negative talk and nay-slayers against Tyler Perry are sad people who wish he could pull them from their boring, haunted, drug addicted lives and turn them into prosperous intelligent people like he has accomplished with several of his actors….keep trying to reach him and maybe he will pull you out the gully too but until then stop hating on Mr. Perry because his ideas either explain your life or you simply can’t handle what is true…LOVE YOU MR.PERRY! you ARE the greatest

I think that a petition is a bit much. I did watch both shows and I have to admit that I do understand why people may be upset but its a little to late now, Tyler Perry has a very strong support system , and plenty of people around him who will not allow any petition to stop the show. My advice, put your money where your mouth is. If you dont like what he is putting out then dont support, it enough non-supporters did that we might see a small change.
Tyler Perry is a comedy producer. it just so happens that he uses stereotypes to make people laugh. If you don’t like it then don’t watch it, he got 1.8 million viewers of one show, he his just doing something that another producer would do except he just so happens to be black. First of all, maybe those who are so against TP need to ask him to help them speak and/or write. Because what you are saying doesn’t make since. If you don’t like what he is doing, don’t watch and/or support him. Which by the way, you helped make that 1.8 million viewer by watching. And those of us who are black and saying these nasty things, you are no better than the others race, that does not want us to get ahead. And that is sad!!!!! When they make movies about us, we are always in the ghetto, children stealing, not going to school, running around without two parents in the home, in jail and/or selling drug. If those of you that have negative things to say about O and Tyler Perry giving us Great Entertainment only knew their hearts, you would know they would not down their race to make a dollar or for ratings. Maybe you should tune in to OWN on Sundays for food for YOUR soul! Lets be proud of a Sister and Brother coming together to bring their talents on a Network owned and operated by A Black Woman. Just wanted to add. I will be praying for those who don’t understand, We, The colored folks, have come a long way in this Industry. Let OWN, and the 1.8 million viewers from last week be a Testiment to that. :) I think i will find a Tyler Perry movie to watch now and get my laugh on. As we all know…Laughing is good for the soul.
Every one has a right to there opinion! I for one use to be a Tyler Perry fan until he did what he said he wouldn’t do-and that’s compromise his craft for Hollywood and he did just that! I don’t like his T.V. shows at all. I ind his movies and shows the same recycled story lines. The plays were much better to me. I understand growth and moving forward but whether you’re supporting him because he’s black or you’re loyal. It doesn’t change the fact that his cast consist of the same people, the comic timing is totally off on his shows and just not entertaining. He forgot the chitterling circuit who loved the plays and went Hollywood. #JMO!?!

Now if we want to do this on a serious note then we need to petition some of the these other kooky shows out there that maybe exploiting some other people for entertainment purposes. What about Honey Boo Boo who is a sassy little white child whose claims to be rednecks, or what about Hollywood Hillbillies that has a cursing grandmother that loves to curse and it’s not bleeped out, and what about La. Preachers who act like pimps and gang bangers. Now don’t forget about all the Housewives of different cities and the Househusbands that are really a joke and the Duck guys who are proud to be called rednecks. I could continue to name shows that are seemingly exploit some race of people all in the name of comedy. Do I like all these shows..no. And what I do if I don’t like a show I flip the channel. I don’t like Spike Lee’s movies so I don’t watch them but I’m not running around getting petitions to shut him down. This is America and we have freedoms to speak and write as we please. If we run around shutting people’s work down we will be set back a hundred years. If you don’t like Mr. Perry’s writings don’t watch them and become offended by them. As highly acclaimed as 12 Years a Slave was I did not go see it and I don’t want to see it I don’t like slave movies because that was a brutal truth of the slavery era. Do I forget..no but it makes me sensitive to the pain of it and I’m sure more slave movies will be made and I may chose not to see them either. We have choices and we are free to make them. Get over it.
