(EXCLUSIVE) Busta Rhymes Settles Lawsuit With The Sugarhill Gang
Busta fired back at the lawsuit and denied he stole from The Sugarhill Gang. He explained that the phrase “Woo-Hah! Got them all in check” is not original or unique and cannot be copyrighted. He says that the phrase ““Woo Hah” is “not unique and that prior to the creation of Defendant’s work could be found in Kung Fu movies and cowboy movies”.
Further, he explained that the phrase in question was used in many songs, live concerts, and live battles prior to The Sugarhill Gang’s song being released and that it was common in the hip hop community.
Rhymes also said that the band didn’t even bring the legal action until 15 years AFTER he released his song and that is past the time the law allows for an infringement case to be brought. The rapper demanded the entire lawsuit be thrown out and The Sugarhill Gang be awarded NOTHING.
Then on October 5th, docs were filed in the case which explain Busta and The Sugarhill Gang have FINALLY reached a settlement in the case. The terms of the deal are confidential but the agreement puts an end to a never ending legal battle between the two over the allegations Busta ripped off their hit song.
