Jay Ellis On Bonding With “Insecure” Cast, Directing For 1st Time (EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW)
Business is booming for Jay Ellis. From playing Blue Westbrook on BET’s The Game to a down-on-his-luck boyfriend in Issa Rae’s HBO hit Insecure, the 34-year-old former model’s star is on the rise. In a recent interview with theJasmineBRAND.com’s @mjthatmediagurl, Ellis talks falling in love with his co-workers, being a first time director and upcoming projects. Peep some excerpts from the interview.
On working with his Insecure cast mates:
It’s amazing! I keep saying this over and over again. I feel like I get to work with the best people in Hollywood. We all get along. We’re a family. We all are on a text message chain. We show up to take pictures in front of the billboard. We go to each other’s house every weekend to watch the show. It’s just amazing.
I would have never imagined I would have fallen in love with a group of people like I have… with everyone. From the writers, executive producers, network people to the cast mates and the extended cast mates. Everybody.
On new projects outside of Insecure:
Directing a little bit. Doing a short film at the top of the year. Doing some YouTube stuff. A lot of reading. Reading scripts and trying to figure out what’s the right project for me. Don’t want to jump into something. I want to be in love with whatever I am doing and fortunately, I can kinda make that choice right now and I’m going to.
On exploring his creativity as a first time director:
[I’m] excited about directing. It’s work. There are a lot of really dope talented people out there who have put years and years into this. I feel like I studied them. Don’t want to fill their shoes or step into their lane. I just want to keep exploring my creativity.
