Mara Brock Akil & Salim Akil’s ‘Love Is _’ Cast Paid Despite OWN Canceling Show
According to reports, the cast and producers of Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil’s “Love Is__” series were paid for the second season, under contractual obligations.
As previously reported, OWN canceled the show, despite ordering a second season. The network said in a statement,
OWN has decided not to move forward with the second season of Love Is _.
The TV memoir was inspired by the real-life love story of married producers Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.
The series has been axed, amidst claims made by a woman named Amber Dixon Brenner. Amber filed a lawsuit against OWN and Salim.
She alleged to have an affair with Salim and claimed that he had physically, sexually and verbally abused her. She also sued for breach of contract. She later dropped her lawsuit against OWN, according to reports.
Earlier this month, Salim’s attorney released a statement denying Amber’s claims.
An inquiry by producer WBTV on both Love Is _ and the CW series Black Lightning took place. Salim is the showrunner on Black Lightning and he and Mara served as executive producers on both shows. No allegations of misconduct by Salim on either show were found as a result of the inquiries.
Mara released a statement about the cancelation.
