Magic Johnson Steps Down As Lakers President of Basketball Operations
The Los Angeles Lakers front office will be undergoing some changes. Prior to Tuesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Magic Johnson announced to the media that he is stepping down from his position as president of basketball operations for the Lakers.
During his press conference, Johnson also said that owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka had no idea he was stepping down.
Johnson alluded to the fact that he wanted to fire coach Luke Walton, but now did not expect Walton to lose his job. At one point, he became emotional, telling reporters,
“It’s hard when you love an organization like I love this organization. It’s hard when you love a person like I love Jeanie.”
See a few tweets below of journalist Dave McMenamin recapping the press conference.
