Jussie Smollett’s ‘Empire’ Character Jamal Lyon Will Be On His Honeymoon Next Season
We now know what will happen to Jamal Lyon on the final season of Fox’s Empire. Jussie Smollett, the actor who portrays Jamal, was kicked off the show amid accusations he staged a hate crime against himself.
While rumors swirled that Jamal would be killed off, it looks like the writers decided to take a different route.
Charlie Collier, the CEO of the network spoke on it at the 2019 Television Critics Association press tour this week. He first confirmed that Smollett would not be returning and echoed comments from co-creator Lee Daniels.

Lee Daniels
“Lee’s right there are no plans for Jussie to return to ‘Empire.”‘
He added,
“[Jamal’s] on his honeymoon! Lee has spoken a lot about the situation and the story will reflect it, but… you’ll see pictures of him in the background. He’s on his homemoon in the storyline.”
This makes sense considering Jamal got married last season.

Meanwhile, Smollett is facing a lawsuit as the city of Chicago wants him to pay for the investigation into his claims that he was attacked in January. He maintains that the attack really did happen. At one point, he was charged for lying to the police, but those charges were dropped. Daniels opened up about being torn over what to believe.

He said,
“If it turned out that he did it, was guilty, and all of it’s accurate…Of course, there’s some doubt. I’m telling you that because I love him so much. That’s the torture that I’m in right now because it’s literally if it were to happen to your son and your child, how would you feel? You would feel, Please, God, please let there be that glimmer of hope that there is some truth in this story. That’s why it’s been so painful. It was a flood of pain.”
“We weren’t there. I can’t judge him. That’s only for the lady or man with that black robe and God. I had to detach myself and stop calling him because it was taking away the time I have for my kids, the time I have for my partner. It was affecting my spirit and other shows, everything.”
