T.I. Purchases Historic Silent Sound Studio In Atlanta
Rapper T.I. is taking the idea of buying back the block seriously. His most recent entrepreneurial venture is the historic Atlanta recording studio, Silent Sound Studios. Originally owned by LaFace collaborator, Daryl Simmons, Silent Sound has been a go-to for industry legends since its founding in 1996. Late icon Whitney Houston was reportedly the first to record there.
Now, T.I. and his partner, engineer Elliot Carter, are keeping the SSS moniker, but changing the name to Super Sound Studio.
Elliot Carter told the Atlanta Journal Constitution:
“We were in the right time and right place. Tip wanted to keep the studio a studio. It’s 25 years of history. He didn’t want it to leave…This was the only space that Tip wanted, with the heritage and quality and size of it. There aren’t many of these left. The whole idea that Tip was involved in keeping the history with the studio, that’s really where I’m proud of being part of it.”
The studio includes two large rooms, a mixing suite, and an upstairs suite. A podcast room is also currently in the works. Elliot Carter bragged on the quality of SSS:
“This is my favorite (studio), not only in Atlanta, but top three in the country. Most engineers would probably agree. The quality of the room, the quality of the equipment…it’s 25 years old and sounds brand new. It’s just this space. No one builds these anymore.”
T.I. and fellow Atlanta rapper Killer Mike have also joined forces to re-open Bankhead Seafood, which they’ve both said was a pillar in the community while they were growing up.
Congratulations, T.I.!
What do you think about his major moves? Tell us in the comments.
