Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Cut Off British Tabloids, Refuse To ‘Offer Themselves As Currency For Click Bait & Distortion’

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are wiping their hands of the harsh British tabloids that are responsible, in large part, for their exit from the Royals. According to reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced that they will no longer engage with publications like the Daily Mail, The Sun, the Daily Express, and the Daily Mirror in a letter to their editors. The couple reportedly believes that these tabloids:

“[circulate] distorted, false or invasive [stories.]”

The former Royals’ representative continued:

“…[they won’t] offer themselves up as currency for an economy of click bait and distortion.”

However, the executive director of Britain’s Society of Editors, Ian Murray, believes their rebellion against the tabloids only condones censorship:

“…there is no escaping their actions here amount to censorship and they are setting an unfortunate example. By appearing to dictate which media they will work with and which they will ignore they, no doubt unintentionally, give succour to the rich and powerful everywhere to use their example as an excuse to attack the media when it suits them.”

While many deem their disdain for British tabloids extreme, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle each have their reasons for dodging the press. Last October, Meghan Markle sued Associated Newspapers – parent company to the Daily Mail – for publishing derogatory stories about the young couple. Prince Harry takes this especially personal, considering he blames paparazzi for the 1997 death of his mother, Princess Diana. He issued this statement on the lawsuit:

“As a couple, we believe in media freedom and objective, truthful reporting. We regard it as a cornerstone of democracy and in the current state of the world – on every level – we have never needed responsible media more.

Unfortunately, my wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences – a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son.

There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face – as so many of you can relate to – I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been. Because in today’s digital age, press fabrications are repurposed as truth across the globe.”

“…It is for this reason we are taking legal action, a process that has been many months in the making. The positive coverage of the past week from these same publications exposes the double standards of this specific press pack that has vilified her almost daily for the past nine months; they have been able to create lie after lie at her expense simply because she has not been visible while on maternity leave…

Though this action may not be the safe one, it is the right one. Because my deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditised to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.”

Yikes! What do you think about Prince Harry’s and Meghan Markle’s cutting off of British tabloids? Let us know in the comments.
