Kandi Burruss Reacts To Backlash After She Broke Social Distancing At Her B-Day Party: We Were Just So Happy To Be Out The House
Entrepreneur, songwriter and star of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” Kandi Burruss chopped it up with comedian and “The Real” talk show co-host Loni Love on Instagram Live Friday (May 22) . The “Used To Love Me” singer recently became the first woman to win the hit TV show “The Masked Singer” where she was unmasked as the night angel.
Still riding high off her win and other gifts that keep giving, Kandi Burruss happily chatted with Loni Love in a quarantine-style live interview!
Kandi Burruss first talked about her surprise birthday celebration on May 17th and responded to criticism she received for not social distancing.
My husband Todd and Don Juan [General Manager for Kandi Koated Entertainment] put together this surprise birthday party for me and it was called the ‘Mask On’ party. I was like Oh y’all just tryna give it away I see! [Laughter] But yeah it was really fun. I hadn’t seen my family and friends in so long I had got overly excited and I was hugging everybody. And I know everybody was mad like ‘you’re not social distancing.’ And I was like I have not seen them in forever, okay? And a lot of my friends had been quarantined like, for months so we were just so happy to be out the house for real.”
Burruss also discussed how her past copyrights from songwriting have generated an increase in current income as well as writing credits. She’s credited for hits like TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills.”
Burruss aid,
“I’ve had so many people sample my copyrights in the past year. I mean, Ariana Grande for one of her singles off this last album. She used part of this song that I had wrote for *NSYNC a long time ago so that gave me a new copyright. It was a lot of people and then some more that’s coming out soon and I’m like super excited. I’ve got all these new songs out that I didn’t really have to go in the studio for because any time you use a piece of one of my songs, that gives me a writer’s credit on the new song and a percentage of it. So it’s just like the gift that just keeps on giving! Thank you, Lord!
Kandi mentioned the surprising success of her adult toy line Bedroom Kandi during the quarantine.
“I thought that the quarantine was gonna hit us hard, you know? It’s like ‘oh they’re not going to be able to do the parties’ and different things. But everybody started revamping the business model. We do these calls that we do once a month to keep everybody motivated and coaching and all that stuff we do to help people with their business. And I was telling them, you know, ‘hey we gon be stuck in the house. Let’s use the Internet, let’s do this, let’s do that…people started having online parties, doing things. And when I tell you we had the biggest month in April that we ever had since we opened the business! And I was like it’s all about your mindset. If you just fall into that whole place of ‘oh woe is me. Oh it’s not gonna work’ then it’s not gonna work. But if you start saying ‘okay, okay I can’t do it that way so let me revamp. Let me think of other ways to do things and make it work, I’m telling you it’ll work.”
The Grammy-Award winning artist also admitted that she is not a professional at balancing work and family life:
Now that’s what I’m working on right now. Trying to figure out how to balance because I do caught up in that work life. I’m not gon lie to you. ‘Cause I enjoy it. I enjoy working or whatever. You know, just try to do my best to make sure that I’m making time for the kids, my family, my husband. You know my husband be feeling like we ain’t getting’ enough time in so now we gotta figure that out. You know, make sure that our quality time at night….you know it’s hard when you got lil kids that be like, oh, they wanna play, they wanna do this. Then by the time the end of the night come we be like [imitates snoring] exhausted!
