Rapper and fashion designer Kanye West was spotted protesting Thursday (June 4) with a group of students and other residents in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois. The protest was organized by local Chicago activist Ja’Mal Green and its purpose was to terminate the contract between the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Public Schools.
The demonstration’s goal was to demand that Chicago police officers be kept out of the area’s schools due to “over-surveillance.” One of the organizers of the march Jalen Jobavashi told NBC 5 Chicago that
“we are living in a state where police are out here killing our kids on their way to and from school.”
Earlier in the day, Kanye West donated $2 million in financial support to the families of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd and also committed to paying all tuition costs for George Floyd’s six-year-old daughter Gianna.
Short video clips have emerged showing Kanye West, dressed in a black hoodie and a black face mask, quietly marching alongside fellow protestors on Chicago’s South Side.
