UPDATE: Larry Hoover Remains Imprisoned On 200-Year Illinois Sentence Despite Trump Commuting Federal Life Term
Donald Trump may have commuted Larry Hoover’s federal sentence, but the former Gangster Disciples leader remains far from freedom.
Hoover, now in his 70s, has spent more than five decades behind bars, most recently in ADX Florence, a supermax prison in Colorado. Though Donald Trump’s clemency ends his federal time, Hoover is still serving a 200-year state sentence in Illinois for a 1973 murder.
In 2024, Larry Hoover told the court he had cut ties with the gang and had changed. “I am no longer the man I was,” he testified.
His release efforts gained national support, including a 2021 benefit concert by Kanye West and Drake.
Trump’s decision is part of a broader clemency push that included reality stars Todd and Julie Chrisley and former Congressman Michael Grimm.
But despite federal relief, Hoover’s state conviction keeps him incarcerated indefinitely.
