Kim Kardashian Defends SKIMS Maternity Line Amid Criticism: It’s Not To Slim, It’s To Support
Kim Kardashian West’s SKIMS is facing criticism once again.
The reality star released a maternity collection in her shapewear line, sparking lots of criticism on social media.
She reacted to the backlash on Twitter Sunday (Sept. 13th):
“To anyone who has an issue with maternity solutionwear, and if you haven’t been pregnant before, you may not know the struggle of what it’s like to carry all this weight the way I did along with millions of strong women, @skims maternity line is not to slim, but to support.”
Kim Kardashian West continued, explaining how maternity garments are designed to support pregnant women:
“The belly part doesn’t slim your belly, it’s actually sheer and a thinner layered material compared to the rest of the garment. It provides support to help with the uncomfortable weight being carried in your stomach which affects your lower back -and the compression on the leggings helps with pain relief caused by swelling. It is also worn after you have given birth and provides the comfort and support that most women need after delivery especially if you are recovering from a cesarean.”
Kim Kardashian West added that the maternity line was born out of pure demand from fans and followers:
“We launched this category in response to the tens of thousands of pregnant women who wrote us requesting it and because it was something I personally needed when I was pregnant myself.”
Kim ended her tweets, stating that she’s been receiving positive feedback from pregnant women who wear her shapewear:
“Based on the majority of positive feedback we have received so far from pregnant women around the world, I am incredibly proud to provide a solution that will provide comfort and support during the times that we all need it most, during pregnancy and after.”
This isn’t the first controversy for the SKIMS brand. Prior to the debut launch of the company, Kim was being accused of cultural appropriation of the Japanese culture for its initial name, Kimono. In August of last year, she announced that she was renamed the company to SKIMS:
“My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me – I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions, and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name. After much thought and consideration, I’m excited to announce the launch of SKIMS Solutionwear™ coming September 10. I love the idea that the pieces will be the closest thing to someone’s skin, skimming with amazingly soft and supportive fabrics which accentuate the best parts of our bodies.”
