Marvin Gaye fans will soon get the chance to see a biopic on his life and accomplishments!
According to reports, the soul icon’s biopic has been greenlit and acquired by Warner Bros. Apparently, the film has been in the works for a few years at this point. It will be co-produced by Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and Andrew Lazar. Additionally, it will be directed by Allen Hughes.

In the making of the Marvin Gaye biopic, Warner Bros. has also acquired the rights to use all of his signature songs–such as “What’s Going On,” which the film is named after.
Several other stars–including Jesse L. Martin and Lenny Kravitz–sought to embark on a biographical project around Marvin Gaye, who was murdered back in 1984 by his own father. However, both stars–as well as an array of others–failed to get authorization from the Gaye family.

Additionally, Deadline reports that the biopic will be more of a musical experience interwoven with his personal experiences rather than a traditional, linear biopic on his life. Reportedly, the biopic will touch on Marvin Gaye‘s relationship with his father, celebrate the women who inspired his music and address his own personal demons and hardships. Those working on the film anticipate that production will begin in 2022, and the film is scheduled to be released in 2023.
