Kandi Burruss Reveals Destiny Child’s ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’ Was ‘Inspired By’ One Of Her Exes, Says A DC Member Was Dating Him At The Time It Was Written
Kandi Burruss is giving new details about the hit song Bills, Bills, Bills that she wrote for Destiny’s Child.
While sharing stories behind five of her most famous songs with Glamour, she said of Bills, Bills, Bills:
“When I got with the girls at the studio, we were singing them the idea. I had the melody of how I felt like the verse should go, and we came together for the lyrics.”
Kandi Burruss added,
“I use a lot of my past relationships as inspiration. The relationship I had been in prior to [writing the song], I took inspiration from it…though I didn’t tell them that.”
She then revealed,
“Now, this is the really funny part: One of the girls that was in the group was dating my ex at the time. So I didn’t tell them that some of the lyrics in there were inspired by him.”
She explained,
“The part that was a clear inspiration—using my phone and pretending like he didn’t use it, driving my car and not putting any gas in it—that was real stuff that had happened to me!”
But don’t expect her to spill who it was. She ended with,
“I won’t tell you who from the group was dating my ex.”
At the time, Destiny’s Child consisted of Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett.
Bills, Bills, Bills was released in 1999 and was featured on Destiny’s Child sophomore album, Writings On The Wall. It garnered two Grammy nominations – one for Best R&B Song and another for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
