DJ Cool V Reveals He & Biz Markie ‘Never Made Money’ From Their Hit Song ‘Just A Friend’: Everybody’s Feeding Their Family Off Our Work
DJ Cool V has opened up about the reality of his and Biz Markie‘s profits from “Just a Friend.”
DJ Cool V is a longtime friend and associate of Biz Markie. The pair have teamed up since the ’80s, and Biz Markie‘s hit “Just a Friend” was spawned out of their partnership.
During his interview with Hip Hop DX, DJ Cool V spoke on how the hit song exceeded the expectations of many, including his and Biz Markie’s. He stated:
“Everybody called us crazy. Like, ‘Yo, you going to really let him do that?’ I said, ‘Man, he feeling it. I got a good feeling about this record.’ And we did it. It just took off. It morphed into something that we could never imagine.”
However, DJ Cool V said the song is very bittersweet to him–largely because he nor Biz Markie ever made money off the hit track.
“The sweetness comes in that we were able to perform it for almost 31 years. And now comes the other side of it–we never made money off the record. I still haven’t got paid for that record.”
He continued:
“But now it gets back to the bittersweet because every time I hear it, it’s going to remind me of Biz, but it’s also going to remind me of how I can’t make more money off of it. Everybody’s feeding their family off our work and we’ve never made money off that record.”
DJ Cool V‘s revelation comes less than a month following Biz Markie‘s death. Biz Markie passed away on July 16th, 2021 as a result of complications from diabetes. He was 57 years old.
