EXCLUSIVE: ‘RHOP’s’ Askale Davis Opens Up About Her Relationship W/ Co-Stars Robyn Dixon & Candiace Dillard, Her Ethnicity & The Importance Of Representation, + Dishes On If She’ll Return To The Reality Series For Another Season
In an exclusive interview with theJasmineBRAND.com, ‘RHOP’s’ Askale Davis set the record straight on her true relationship with Robyn Dixon and why she often comes to Candiace Dillard-Bassett’s defense. She also shared with us why she decided to join the Bravo series and if fans can expect to see her again for season 7.
Askale Davis is a mother, wife, career woman, and now reality star! The Howard University alumna joined the popular reality series ‘The Real Housewives of Potomac’ this year for season 6.
Askale Davis, 36, was initially introduced on ‘RHOP’ as a friend of series O.G. castmember Robyn Dixon, 42. In one of her first Potomac episodes, viewers got to watch as Askale helped Robyn Dixon out with her apparel line Embellished.
While chatting with us Askale Davis cleared up the confusion that she’s only ‘Robyn’s help.’ She said,
“I think it’s so funny that people like – I get comments all the time like ‘aren’t you Robyn’s
help?’ Like, ‘do you work for Robyn?’ I’m like ‘no.’ Although I see how they introduced us like we were – I was helping her out with her business.”
She continued,
“But it’s like we’re friends. Friends help out friends with their businesses or whatever they
have going on. Like I’m that friend. I’m not too good for anything, you know. If you need help with this [or] if you need help with that, I will come over. I got you.”
Askale then shared that she had some reservations to overcome when she was first approached to join the popular series in a friend slot.
“I mean it’s exciting but of course, you know, you have your reservations. But, you know, it’s all – I believe that everything is like – it’s such a higher power. I believe in God and it’s like, you know, God’s plan.”
She added that her husband, Dre Davis has been a huge support in her reality TV endeavors
“He’s so supportive! Like Dre was like ‘whatever makes you happy.’ [That] is really just his motto.”
This may be Askale’s first season on ‘RHOP’ but it seems like she’s already become a fan favorite. When asked if we can expect to see her for season 7 as a friend again or an official castmember, Askale replied,
“I get [asked] that all the time and I’m like, you know, ‘you’ll just have to wait and see.’”
She continued and shared that if she wants to return or not “depends on the day.”
She added,
“Wendy Williams said it best, you know, ‘I’m a woman and I’m allowed to change my opinion at any given time.’”
Askale may not be ready to dish on if she’s returning to ‘RHOP’ for another season just yet but she did share with us a huge reason why she initially signed off on joining the show. The fashionista is a proud Ethiopian and wanted to give people that look like her a chance to see their heritage proudly represented on a large platform. Askale shared,
“I didn’t grow up seeing people like me on TV and that means Ethiopian, immigrant, [and] first-generation American. And I think it’s really important, especially from the generation that’s behind me or coming up after me, to see people that look like them. The things that I strived to be when I was younger are not the things that I strive to be now.”
She added,
“And you know it’s really important for people to see themselves on TV, people that look like them. And that was honestly one of the main reasons why I chose to join ‘RHOP.’”
Askale definitely picked the right platform to tell her story on! ‘RHOP’ has a large fan base and the series is watched by millions worldwide. During her interview with theJasmineBRAND, Askale touched on the popularity of ‘The Real Housewives of Potomac’ and the relatability of her co-stars. She said,
“First I want to say [that] ‘RHOP’ didn’t become ‘RHOP’ today because of the two new cast members. So the ladies, the veteran ladies have really put in work, you know, they’ve definitely set the foundation.”
She continued,
“But I just think like everybody is just real. Like they’re strong.”
She added,
“They’re just real. They’re strong. I think we can all see ourselves in every single one of the [Potomac] ladies.”
One ‘RHOP’ lady who found herself in the hot seat multiple times this season for her quick tongue is Candiace Dillard-Bassett, 34. Candiace Dillard Bassett was accused by her co-stars of always taking things too far while in verbal arguments with other Potomac ladies. Before our time with Askale came to an end she revealed why she stood up for Candiace against the criticism she faced this season. She said,
“First of all like I didn’t agree with the comments that were made that, you know, if [Candiace] would have got clocked [for her commentary] she would have deserved it. Like, I don’t condone violence. If we’re all grown women we can control ourselves.”
She continued,
“And the thing with Candiace is – Candiace welcomed me with open arms and she was nothing but nice to me. So if she didn’t know me from a can of paint and she’s nice to me then I would assume that’s what she’s given to the next person as well.”
She added,
“it’s like don’t start nothing won’t be nothing.”
“You can’t hurt somebody or talk mess to somebody and then sit there and try to judge how they respond to you.”
