Mary J. Blige ‘Didn’t Feel Beautiful’ Until 2016: I Was At My Point Of No Real Confidence
We all deal with insecurities and superstar Mary J. Blige is no exception to that rule.
Mary J. Blige, 51, has been in the entertainment business since 1991. In addition to dominating the music industry, the multi-Grammy-Award-winning artist is also an actress and has been featured in numerous television and film projects. During a recent interview, Mary J. Blige revealed that despite having years of experience of being in the spotlight, it wasn’t until recently that she gained her confidence. She said,
“I didn’t feel beautiful—like for real for real, not just ‘Hey, I’m pretty’ but actually believing it—until about 2016.”
As previously reported, in 2018 Mary J. Blige and her ex-husband Kendu Isaacs divorced. During her interview, the ‘Just Fine’ songstress alluded that her previous marriage contributed to her self-esteem issues. She said.
“If you’ve been beat down mentally by someone, you’re never pretty enough. You’re never smart enough. Nothing’s ever good enough.”

Mary J. Blige continued and shared that it wasn’t until she landed the role of Florence Jackson in the Netflix film ‘Mudbound’ that she started to work on how she viewed herself.
She said,
“When I shot Mudbound, I was at my point of no real confidence.”
She continued and shared that compliments from people on set helped her repair her self-image. She added that every morning while on set she would tell herself, “This chick is beautiful.”
She added,
“So I started to believe it and started to pay myself high compliments to get past that feeling and that fear.”
“During Mudbound and when I was married, I was feeling so low. I had to pay myself the highest compliments, even if I didn’t believe it, just so I could build myself up.”
She also shared that even today her morning mantra is still to say to herself,
“Good morning, Gorgeous. I love you. I got you. I need you.”
