Damon Dash Wants To Do A Verzuz Battle — With His Rock Group
Damon Dash has worn many hats in his career, from record executive to entrepreneur. Most recently, the Roc-A-Fella records co-founder added the title of singer to his many accolades, serving as the frontman of a rock band called The Black Guns. He spoke to The Jasmine Band about the group and wanting to take them to the Verzuz stage next.
Damon Dash, 50, reportedly started the group in 2019. They have since released “plenty of records,” he told The Jasmine Brand, including the 2020 album Therapy.
“I got the best band in the universe,”Damon Dash said, noting the group also includes talented guitarist Tash, who was touring with iconic Guns N’ Roses rocker Slash at the time of the interview.
“I would do a Verzuz with any band — with any rock band,” he shared.
When asked to pick one he’d like to battle against, Dash named The Black Keys. Hailing from the Midwest, The Black Keys is a music duo best known for their 2010 rock song “Tighten Up” — and Dame even had a hand in their success.
“You know, I put their first hot album out,” he noted, referring to their 2009 album Blakroc.
“That’s the record I did with them. And I put them with Mos Def, and RZA, and Raekwon the Chef, and Q-Tip … You could Google it, it’s visuals and all that. You could see it. Yeah, I would battle The Black Keys.”
Verzuz was first launched in 2020 by legendary music producers Swizz Beatz and Timbaland as a way to entertain audiences during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Battles have included all kinds of artists, ranging from R&B acts such as Brandy and Monica, to rap titans Gucci Mane and Jeezy, to neo-soul singers Anthony Hamilton and Musiq Soulchild. Fans can watch Verzuz on the Triller app or on Instagram Live.
