Mary J. Blige Explains Why She Doesn’t Want Kids: I Like My Freedom
Mary J. Blige may have a lot of love to offer, but she does not have the time to devote it to children.
In a recent interview with E! Daily Pop, the singer and actress admitted she enjoys her freedom and doesn’t want to be the mother scrambling for a babysitter—at least not any time soon.
“I’m not there yet, I’m good,” she said, per ThatGrapeJuice. She continued
“I have nieces and nephews forever, and I’m always watching how people are scrambling around for babysitters. I don’t want to go through that. I like my freedom, I like being able to get up and go and move and do what I want to do. I don’t want to have to tend to someone all the time.”

It’s unlikely Mary J. Blige has the time to raise children at this point in her career, considering she’s been booked and busy lately. The “Not Gon’ Cry” singer recently wrapped up her role as Monet Stewart Tejada in Starz’ “Power Book II: Ghost.”
Mary J. Blige also released her 14th studio album, Good Morning Gorgeous, on February 11. She explained,
“The title came from some real, heavy, trying to dig myself out of some terrible, horrible place. So I just started speaking every day, ‘good morning gorgeous,’ ‘good morning beautiful,’ ‘good morning sexy’ … whatever it is that I wanted to be. And that’s what started to help me to grow and have the power to actually move away from that negative situation, you know, get out of it.”

In an interview with Power 105.1’s Angie Martinez, MJB admitted that the third fourth on her recent album, titled “Rent Money,” was inspired by true events. The song was based on a time when she had to pay her ex-husband Martin “Kendu” Isaacs $30,000 per month in spousal support, which resulted in her not being able to pay her rent and forced her to tour so she could make ends meet.
“Rent Money” is [about] when I first got divorced. I had to give up all this alimony, and I didn’t have no more money to give because he had spent it all. So, I had to go, you know, I had to go on tour, and make all the money back to pay the alimony,” she said.
“I didn’t have no money to pay my rent and all this other stuff. But it’s also a metaphor like, I didn’t have my soul. I was just drained of everything. So it was time for somebody to pay; sometimes you just feel like somebody gotta pay.”
MJB married Kendu Isaacs, her manager at the time, in 2003. She filed for divorce in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences. The pair officially divorced in 2018.
MJB also starred in Hologic’s first-ever national advertising campaign, which aired during a 30-second slot during Super Bowl LVI. For the second time, MJB took to the Super Bowl stage, this time alongside Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar.

As previously reported, MJB admitted she was not paid for the Super Bowl LVI performance, but she was fine with that because the exposure alone would bring in big bucks. She said ahead of the show,
“Listen, you’re going to get paid for the rest of your life off of this. People are going to be knocking at your [door]”.
