Questlove – Producer For Musician’s Doc ‘Summer of Soul’ Says Will Smith ‘Robbed’ Filmmaking Team Of Their Oscar-Winning Moment & Slams Chris Rock For ‘Disrespectful’ Jokes
Looks like the list of people upset with Will Smith and Chris Rock over their Oscar antics continue to grow.
As previously reported, While presenting the Oscar for Best Documentary at the 94th annual Academy Awards, Chris Rock, 57 was slapped by Will Smith, 53. The unexpected altercation occurred following Chris Rock’s controversial joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, being bald. The “Girls Trip” actress has alopecia.

After the slap, Chris attempted to keep the prestigious ceremony on track and announced Questlove’s documentary “Summer of Soul” as the winning film in its nominated category, however, it seems like the damage was already done. On Wednesday (Mar. 30) “Summer of Soul” producer Joseph Patel said in a now-deleted tweet that Will’s actions “robbed” him and his filmmaking team of their celebratory moment. He tweeted,
“It robbed the category of its moment. It robbed the other excellent and amazing films of their moment to be acknowledged in what was a STRONG year for docs.”

Questlove, Joseph Patel
Patel, who is South Asian, also called out Chris for how he announced the winner of the Best Documentary category. While on stage Chris said the winners were,
“Ahmir Thompson (Questlove) and four white guys.”
Patel shared he was upset over Chris’ comment and tweeted,
“Chris Rock lumped me in as 1 of ‘4 white guys.'”
He continued,
“The reason that makes me SO SO VERY ANGRY is because I was so proud to be one of a handful of South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the history of the award. I’m a big boy — I can take a joke. Comedians make jokes. But not in that moment. What a shitty, disrespectful thing to do.”
He added,
“What both Will AND Chris did really stained what should have been a beautiful moment for us.”
