DaniLeigh Reflects On Her ‘Yellow Bone’ Song Controversy: To Even Speak On Skintone, I Realize How Messed Up That Is

DaniLeigh is opening up about her controversial 2021 “Yellow Bone” song which stirred up quite the frenzy on social media.

During her recent interview with Angie Martinez, DaniLeigh spoke candidly about her tumultuous relationship with DaBaby as well as a few controversial moments she faced over the past couple of years – most notably, her “Yellow Bone” song controversy which garnered accusations of colorism and anti-blackness.

While the 27-year-old singer previously issued an apology, she’s now going in more depth and reflecting on the mistake she made. DaniLeigh explained,

“When I did drop the snippet and saw how everyone reacted I was like ‘Oh, I was like, I messed up.’ I didn’t super realize it at that time and that’s why I responded like defensive. But it was a horrible mistake. It was not a good moment for sure for me. It was a hard time.”

She continued,

“In that time, like, a lot was going on in my life like me and Baby broke up, that happened, me and my family, I was pregnant, like it was all at once and I was like ‘What is God trying to teach me right now?’ ‘Cause it was definitely a learning lesson for me and I just want to say to everybody that I’m super sorry ’cause it just was a mistake.”

She added,

“I’m a Dominican woman, I have family members that are dark-skinned. My daughter is a Black girl. It just was… to even speak on skin tone I realized that how messed up that is now.”

As previously reported, last year, DaniLeigh made headlines over a new song that she teased on social media. In an Instagram post, the “Easy” singer previewed a snippet of the single “Yellow Bone,” and her comment section was overwhelmed with negative remarks and accusations of colorism.

In reacting to some of the negativity, she initially responded.

“Why I can’t make a song for my light skin baddies ?? Why y’all think I’m hating on other colors when there are millions of songs speaking on all types.. why y’all so sensitive & take it personal .. gahhhh d*mn.”

She later issued an apology and explained her intentions behind the song. DaniLeigh explained,

“I feel super misunderstood. My song ‘Yellow Bone Is What He Want’, I think people twisted it into thinking that I’m trying to bash another woman, another skin tone. That was never my intention. I wasn’t brought up like that. I ain’t never looked at my skin as a privilege, I’ve never looked at me as I’m better than somebody bc of my skin tone.”

She then pointed out that she sees brown skin woman celebrate their skin tone, and says she was simply doing the same.

“I see brown skin woman flaunt their skin all the time in music, why can’t I talk about mine? If you look at me, I’m light skin, I’m a yellow bone in my opinion that’s just what i am. It wasn’t something that I looked at so deeply which i can see why people will take it deeply. I understand, and I’m sorry that I wasn’t sensitive to the topic when I wrote my comment like ‘why are you guys taking it so personal’ because it can be a personal thing to certain people because colorism is a real thing so I do get it, but i’m not that.”

DaniLeigh

She proclaimed that she was not a colorist and that her song should not have been taken that way.

“I’m not a colorist, I’m not a racist, I date a whole chocolate man , I have beautiful dark skin friends. Skin isn’t something I even see, its not something I look at.”
