Tank Sheds Tears As He Explains How The Late Aaliyah Validated Him: Nothing Trumps That!
Singer-songwriter Tank is opening up about receiving the stamp of approval from the one and only Aaliyah.
It’s been 20 years since Aaliyah departed in the physical form, but the words she once said to Tank still hold special meaning. During an interview on REVOLT’s Drink Champs, the “F*ckin’ wit Me singer told N.O.R.E.,
“Aaliyah told me ‘you’re ready, you’re ready for this s*it.
He continued,
“Nothing validates you more than a woman. When Aaliyah says ‘you’re that guy,’ that makes all the difference in the world. Nothing trumps that. And when she said that to me, I took it, and I ran with it.”
“I said Aaliyah said it, so can’t none of y’all f*ck with me. I don’t care what none of y’all say, Aaliyah said I’m him.”
Aaliyah died at the peak of her career on August 25, 2001. The 22-year-old had just finished shooting her music video for “Rock The Boat” and was en route from the Bahamas. The plane she was traveling on, which was chartered for Miami, crashed and killed her as well as eight others.
Tank, who got his start as a backup vocalist for Ginuwine and Aaliyah in 1997, released his first single as a solo artist in 2000. He’s been nominated for five Grammy Awards since then, and according to Billboard, his albums have sold 1.76 million copies in the U.S. as of 2013.
