Charlamagne Tha God Shares How Therapy Helped Him & His Father Acknowledge “Daddy Issues” + Reveals His Father Once Tried To Commit Suicide
Media personality Charlamagne Tha God is reaffirming his stance about the benefits of therapy.
The Breakfast Club host recently opened up about how mental health sessions have helped him and his father work through trauma issues. While discussing how better mental health movements, led by younger generations – continue to help individuals unpack generational trauma, Lenard ‘Charlamagne Tha God’ McKelvey, stated:
“When I started talking about my issues, that opened up my father to tell me how he was going to therapy two or three times a week.”

He continued:
“[And] how he tried to commit suicide 30 years ago and how he’s been on ten to twelve different medications.”
The media host has routinely been open and honest while discussing childhood trauma stemming from his father, Larry McKelvey. In his book Black Privilege, Charlamagne detailed suffering emotional abuse as a child, admitting that he once ended up in a jail cell alongside his father.
As he goes on in the special, Charlamagne attributes the ability to speak more openly with his father to therapy. He stated:
“That helped me give him grace, cause when I started going to therapy I realized I had a lot of daddy issues.”
Then continued:
“Which is something men don’t talk about….but daddy’s do a number on their sons too in a real way.”
Charlamagne has intensified his efforts as a mental health advocate in recent years. In his book, “Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks On Me,” the radio host shared he was only diagnosed with anxiety at the age of 30. Because of this, he’s dedicated himself to offering mental health services to people in need who may lack resources.
Reposting the interview to his Instagram page, Charlamagne captioned the post:
“Ya’ll out here trying to get likes, i’m out here trying to break generational curses. We are not the same!!! What I’m discussing in this video is exactly why I feel like crying every-time I hear Kendrick Lamar “Father Time.” Let’s Discuss….. #InvestInYourMentalWealth”
