Ice Cube Regrets Turning Down ‘Menace II Society’ Role Out Of Fear Of Being Typecast: I Was Like, ‘Nah I Don’t Wanna Play That’
Multi-talented entertainer Ice Cube is opening up about his career regrets.
While visiting On The Guest List podcast, the rapper turned actor shared the one movie role he regrets turning down. Ice Cube, born O’Shea Jackson, revealed he once had a chance to star in the 1993 film “Menace To Society”. The culture classic starred Tyrin Turner, Larenz Tate, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Samuel L. Jackson.
During the interview, the 53-year-old answered the question of which role he regrets not taking, stating:
“I would say Menace II Society. I had a shot to do O-Dog, even though I think Larenz Tate killed it,”
The Ride Along star continued on, explaining that his previous role in John Singleton’s critically acclaimed film Boyz N The Hood was too similar to the part in MIIS. He stated:
“I just didn’t wanna be typecast. You know what I mean? I was like, ‘I just did Boyz N The Hood and they just gonna have me be the L.A. gangbanger, you know what I mean every d*mn movie,’
He continued:
“I was like, ‘Nah I don’t wanna play that.'”
Though deciding not to take the role, Cube says he had a change in perspective after seeing the film. The part, that ultimately launched the career of his fellow actor Larenz Tate, portrayed a short tempered gang member with a fearlessness to pull a trigger. Speaking on his thoughts post the movies release, he stated:
“That was one movie that when I saw it I was like, ‘Ooo that role is cold.’”
Despite this, Cube has gone on to star in various genres of movies, raking in millions of dollars at the box office. His slew of family comedies, biopic films, and culture stories have inspired many entertainers. Most recently, rapper Quavo spoke about Cube’s ability to transcend rap. The Migos member stated:
“I kind of want to be like an Ice Cube when it comes to rapping and acting….I don’t think people realize what that man did. He did it culturally in the music and with the movies. I feel like that’s what the world’s missing right now.”
