Whoopi Goldberg Reveals It Was Her Idea To Give ‘Cinderella’ Queen Character Her Signature Vocal Trait: She Doesn’t Finish Sentences She Makes Sounds
Whoopi Goldberg’s creativity helped create an iconic character.
Recently, actress/comedian Whoopi Goldberg shared how she put together one of the funniest performances in the 1997 movie Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. According to Whoopi Goldberg, the Queen character is actually based upon herself. The View host said:
“I wanted her to be me in a dress. A little silly, a little fun. And I gave her a distinction.”
The 66-year-old continued:
“She doesn’t finish sentences, she makes sounds.”
During the interview, the For Colored Girls actress was described as the “soul of [the] production.” She shared that the expensive jewelry used throughout the film was her idea. She admitted:
“I love Harry Winston.”
She added:
“I said, ‘Listen, I’m playing this queen and I would like to have some jewels. Will you guys loan us some jewels?’ They said, ‘We’ll pick out our most royal jewels.’ And so that’s what they did.”
The jewelry was placed on a guarded watch, according to Jason Alexander, who plays Lionel in the film. He said:
“There were armed guards just beside the camera.”
Jason Alexander continued:
“So that if anybody approached or Whoopi made a mistake and tried to leave the set with that jewelry on, someone would have been shot.”
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella recently celebrated its 25th year anniversary and had a reunion special that trended on Twitter.
