Mike Tyson Explains His ‘Health Problem’, Says His Sciatica Diagnosis Is The Reason He Had To Use A Wheelchair: When It Flares Up, I Can’t Even Talk
Mike Tyson has revealed he is suffering from a rare health condition named Sciatica after photos emerged showing the former heavyweight champion of the world in a wheelchair last month.
Concerns for Mike Tyson’s health emerged last month when the boxing legend was spotted leaving the airport in a wheelchair while also holding a walking stick. The 56-year-old posed for selfies with fans as he was wheeled through the terminal by an airport employee. However, during a recent interview, Tyson clarified the speculation surrounding his health.
He revealed,
“I have sciatica every now and then, it flares up. When it flares up, I can’t even talk! Thank God it’s the only health problem I have. I’m splendid now.”
He added,
“Everybody in my house is truly blessed and we’re all very grateful for whatever we have.”

The condition impacts nerve endings in the body with Mike Tyson appearing to be suffering with complications related to his back. The former heavyweight champ was forced to retire back in 2005 due to his ongoing back problems.
According to reports, sciatica is a condition where the sciatic nerve– which runs from your lower back to your feet– is irritated or compressed. It usually gets better in 4 to 6 weeks but can last longer.
While there was some concern, Tyson appeared to be moving well at the U.S. Open earlier this month, where he attended Serena Williams’ last match at Arthur Ashe stadium in Flushing Meadows.
In July, Mike Tyson worried some of his fans when he confessed on his own ‘Hotboxin’ podcast that he was unsure how much longer he would live. He said,
“We’re all gonna die one day of course. Then, when I look in the mirror, I see those little spots on my face…I say, “Wow. That means my expiration date is coming close, really soon.”
Taking to his Twitter account, the sports personality wrote:
“Hulu tried to desperately pay my brother @danawhite millions without offering me a dollar to promote their slave master take over story about my life. He turned it down because he honors friendship and treating people with dignity. I’ll never forget what he did for me just like I’ll never forget what Hulu stole from me.”
