Big Latto Explains Why She No Longer Goes By Rap Name ‘Mulatto,’ Says She Was Young When She Was Given The Name: I Was Just Being Mature About It & Being Open Ears
Big Latto, formerly known as Mulatto, has revealed why she decided to switch up her rap name.
In a new episode of REVOLT TV podcast “Caresha Please,” rapper Big Latto sat down with City Girls member Yung Miami for a candid conversation about women empowerment, changing her name, relationships, and more.

As you may already know, Big Latto first appeared on the reality television series “The Rap Game” in 2016, where she was known as Miss Mulatto and won the show’s first season.
The meaning of “mulatto” is reportedly the first-generation offspring of a Black person and a white person and is considered to be an offensive and colorist term. As previously reported, the award-winning artist, a mixed woman, faced backlash for her now-former name’s origin. Born Alyssa Stephens, Latto faced plenty of criticism for calling herself the term.

During the interview, show host Yung Miami asked the 23-year-old if she felt pressured to change her name due to the negative reactions. Also known as Latto, the rapstress dished on her push to change her stage name as an artist and said,
“I think yeah it had something to do with it for sure. I’d be lying if I said it didn’t. Where I think people need to cut me a little slack is that I was young. A lot of people think I came up with this name. I did not give myself that name first of all.”
She continued,
“I knew I didn’t mean no ill intent with it so I’m like, ‘F*ck y’all I know what I mean and I said what I said.’ Until I’m getting older I’m kind of having my own opinion on stuff and I’m just having my own beliefs and morals as a woman.”

Latto added,
“Y’all ain’t bully me out my sh*t. I was just being mature about it and being open ears versus being closed minded and just young.”
