Summer Walker Questions What Qualifies As R&B Music Following AMAs Loss: Thank Goodness For My Fans, Y’all The Only Ones Gone Give A B*tch Some Credit

Summer Walker wants to know what’s classified as R&B music, a comment that comes after she lost in several categories during the 2022 American Music Awards last night (Nov. 20).

The “Section 32” singer missed out on the chance to win Favorite R&B Album and Favorite Female R&B Artist in favor of Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, who also won Favorite R&B Song.

While seemingly talking about the AMAs and how they organize their categories, Summer Walker said,

“What’s classified as R&B sounds so different in 2022 compared to back in the day. These r&b awards be won by pop songs, hip hop songs, house songs, it’s really interesting.”

She added,

“Thank goodness for my fans lmao. Y’all the only ones gone give a btch some credit.”

Summer Walker was nominated in the Best Album category for her work on Still Over It, which she released in November 2021 and features Cardi B, JT of City Girls, SZA, Ari Lennox, and Lil Durk, among other artists. The album had the best opening week for a female R&B artist since Beyoncé’s Lemonade in 2016, according to the US Billboard 200.

Summer and Beyoncé faced Doja Cat, Muni Long, and SZA in the category of Favorite Female R&B Artist.

This isn’t the first time Summer felt as though she wasn’t receiving the credit she deserves, at least not from the music industry.

Following Doja Cat’s victorious night at the Billboard Music Awards in May, Summer Walker’s now ex-boyfriend questioned why the “Get Into It” rapper was placed in multiple R&B categories. Summer was also nominated in the same R&B categories as Doja Cat. LVRD Pharoh shared posts via his IG stories calling out the BBMAs and seemingly taking a few shots at Doja Cat as well. He said,
