Gayle King Confirms She Was Up Against Whoopi Goldberg For A Seat On ‘The View’: I knew I Wasn’t Getting That Job
In another universe “The View’s” hosts might have looked a little different.
Gayle King recently appeared on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live,” where she admitted that she was in competition with Whoopi Goldberg for a seat on “The View.” After a fan asked the journalist if the rumors were true about her running up against Whoopi Goldberg to be a co-host on the famed talk show, Gayle King responded:
“You know, I knew I wasn’t getting it?”
Whoopi Goldberg has been a part of “The View” for 15 years since landing her spot as a co-host on the show in 2007.
Gayle King continued and shared:
“Cindy Adams, who’s a gossip columnist here in the city, she wrote a column that said ‘Gayle King is in the running.’ — Cause I’ve done the show a couple of times. — ‘Gayle King is in the running for a spot on The View.’ And she said, ‘trust me kiddies, that will never happen.”

King then elaborated and explained that Cindy Adams and Barbara Walters, who created “The View,” are really good friends which is why she knew she wasn’t getting the gig.
“Now why did I believe that? Because Cindy is very good friends with Barbara Walters! Right after that column Barbara called me a couple days later and said ‘I just wanted to call you personally, we decided to go in another direction.’ And I said, you know ‘okay who?’ and she told me ‘Whoopi.’”
The author added:
“When Cindy said ‘trust me kiddies that will never happen, I knew I wasn’t getting that job.”
She concluded:
“You know what things have worked out, so I’m okay.”
Although being a co-host on “The View” didn’t work out, King is now an active co-host for CBS’s morning program, as well as she’s an editor-at-large for Oprah Winfrey’s magazine.
