Deion Sanders Faces Backlash For Controversial Comments On Recruiting, Says He Looks For ‘Dual Parent’ Homes In QB Recruits & ‘Single Mama’ Households In Defensive Linemen ‘Just Trying To Make It’

Coach Deion Sanders is in the hot seat for his latest comments on recruiting in college football.

During an interview, former NFL star Deion Sanders spoke on what he looks for in the families of his recruits. While the interview occurred earlier this month, the footage recently resurfaced on Twitter and is going viral on the bird app. The 55-year-old is currently facing backlash as many people are claiming his controversial comments only perpetuate racist stereotypes.

While speaking on the family dynamics he wants his players to have, Deion “Primetime” Sanders said during the interview,

“Now, quarterbacks are different. We want mother, father. Dual parent. We want that kid to be 3.5 [GPA] and up. Because he has to be smart. Not bad decisions off the field, at all. Because he has to be a leader of men. It’s so many different attributes in what we look for.”

Sanders went on and shared what he looks for in his defensive linemen. These comments in particular seemingly sparked criticism as his criteria when recruiting quarterbacks is completely different from when recruiting defensive players. He continued,

“Defensive linemen is totally opposite. Single mama, trying to get it, he’s on free lunch. I’m talking about just trying to make it. He’s trying to rescue mama. Like mama barely made the flight. And I want him to just go get it.”

Following his appearance, reactions to the interview began pouring in online via Twitter with many social media users not pleased with Sanders and his remarks.

As you may recall, in 2020 Sanders became the head football coach at Jackson State University. During his time there, Sanders led the program to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) title. Despite a successful time as the HBCU’s football team head coach, in December, Sanders announced he was leaving the university to coach University of Colorado Boulder after being at JSU for three years.
