Update: Top NFL Draft Prospect Jalen Carter Sentenced To Probation For His Alleged Involvement In Wreck That Left 2 People Dead
Update: (Mar. 16, 2023): Jalen Carter has avoided jail time for his alleged involvement in a car crash that left two people dead.
As previously reported, In January the 21-year-old athlete was accused of racing his vehicle against UGA’s recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy, who had the university’s offensive lineman Devin Willock riding along in her Ford Expedition. Both vehicles were said to have surpassed 100 mph in speed during the reported race.
Unfortunately, LeCroy — who was suspected to have an inappropriate amount of alcohol in her system at the time of the incident — collided with two utility poles and trees. Willock was ejected from the vehicle and died on the scene, and LeCroy died after being taken to a hospital, according to reports.
Initial reports claimed Jalen Carter left the scene of the accident before emergency personnel arrived but returned around 90 minutes later at the request of police. However, he allegedly “gave shifting accounts of the wreck as an Athens police officer questioned him about whether he had been racing the car that crashed.”
On Thursday (Mar. 16) Jalen Carter pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing. He was sentenced to 12 months of probation, a $1,000 fine, and 80 hours of community service. He also will attend a state-approved defensive driving course.
His attorney released a statement and said,
“We are happy that we were able to work with the solicitor general’s office to reach a resolution that was fair and just based on the evidence in this case,”
“Mr Carter continues to grieve for the loss of his friends and continues to pray for their families, as well as for the continued healing for injured friends.”
Original story: (Mar. 2, 2023): NFL candidate Jalen Carter has been released from police custody.
On Wednesday (Mar. 1), Georgia Bulldogs phenomenon Jalen Carter turned himself in after the Athens-Clarke County Police Department reportedly issued two warrants for his arrest.
The edicts were in connection to Jalen Carter’s alleged role in a fatal car crash that took place this past January, leaving University of Georgia’s offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy dead and a pair of others injured.
According to sources, 21-year-old Carter was accused of racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against Chandler LeCroy’s 2021 Ford Expedition when she collided with two utility poles and trees. Both vehicles were said to have surpassed 100 mph in speed, and Chandler LeCroy was suspected to have an inappropriate amount of alcohol in her system at the time of death.
Authorities booked Carter on two misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and racing. Ultimately, they released him in under an hour on a $4,000 bail. He has since returned to the NFL Scouting Combine, which is underway at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The rising football star’s arraignment hearing is scheduled for April 18.
Hours before his arrest, Carter took to his Twitter account to post a public statement, maintaining his innocence in the ongoing case.
He wrote:
“This morning I received a telephone call from the Athens Georgia Police Department informing me that two misdemeanor warrants have been issued against me for reckless driving and racing. Numerous media reports also have circulated this morning containing inaccurate information concerning the tragic events of January 15, 2023.”
He added in conclusion,
“It is my intention to return to Athens to answer the misdemeanor charges against me and make certain that the complete and accurate truth is presented. There is no question in my mind that when all of the facts are known that I will be fully exonerated of any criminal wrongdoing.”
