The Weeknd Sets Guinness World Record As Most Popular Artist, Social Media Reacts: ‘The Internet Always Elevating The Undeserving Mid Artistes’
The Weeknd is out here breaking records, literally.
The “Creepin'” artist (real name Abel Tesfaye) has set two new Guinness World Records, cementing his position as statistically the most popular music artist in the world.

According to reports, the Canadian native currently has the most monthly listeners on Spotify, with a staggering 111.4 million listeners per month, based on the most recent data released on March 20. He is also the first artist to surpass 100 million listeners per month on the streaming service.
And that’s not all. The artist’s track “Blinding Lights,” which has been heard 3.4 billion times on Spotify, was previously the most-played song of all time.
With the recent release of “Die For You (Remix),” which he collaborated on with Ariana Grande, The Weeknd also recently overtook Michael Jackson as the only artist with multiple No. 1 tracks from three of his albums.
While numbers seemingly don’t lie, a lot of social media users couldn’t understand the artist’s recent recognition.
One Twitter user said,
“my colleagues don’t know who the weeknd is, ain’t nobody more popular than beyoncé”

Another user added,
“The internet always elevating the undeserving mid artistes.”

In the opinion of another Twitter user,
“The Weekend doesn’t have enough bangers to be this popular!!”
Another user said,
“this record being based on Spotify monthly listeners is insane”

Regardless, there are clearly a ton of people who are a fan of Abel.
The Weeknd launched his career in 2009 by anonymously posting tracks on YouTube. His mixtapes House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence were published two years later after he co-founded the XO record label. His achievements include four Grammy Awards, 20 Billboard Music Awards, and six American Music Awards.
